Tucked into a corner of the Horikawa Shopping Street in Kyoto's Kamigyo Ward, THE NICOLE immediately catches the eye with the sheer height of the rolled omelet pressed between slices of bread. The signature thick dashimaki sandwich relies on a combined dashi broth brewed from bonito flakes, kombu kelp, and shiitake mushrooms, served piping hot from the pan with an airy, trembling texture. Each bite releases a gentle, savory broth. It can be enjoyed on-site as part of a set with salad and a drink, or ordered to go.

Beyond light bites, the lunch menu features a substantial lineup of curries. The meatless Nicole Curry simmers generous heaps of vegetables until sweet and savory in a rich European style, with the option to crown it with a soft, melting omelet. The kitchen also turns out aromatic spiced curries and spiced curry udon that ties bonito and kelp broth to warming seasonings, highlighting the depth of traditional Japanese dashi.

Because the shop also operates as a Western confectionery, desserts for tea time or after a meal merit equal attention. Pancakes made with maple-scented batter are caramelized directly on the surface, offering a crisp, brittle crust against a moist, tender interior. Accompanied by showcase cakes, crèmes brûlées, and matcha or hojicha lattes brewed with tea leaves from Obubu Tea Farms, the room invites unhurried lingering.
